Here’s my exact guide on how to draw an underwater scene with ‘magical’ details!
Hello Friends!
I’ve always been an enthusiast of all things water, mermaids and the tropics. That combined with trying to think of an excuse to use the 12 new Tombow dual brush pen colours, gave me the idea to create this tutorial. It’s a draw with me underwater scene! While the 12 new Tombow dual brush pen colours are simply gorgeous, an exciting part of this tutorial is the use of the Tombow glue pen and how it creates ‘magical’ details in this underwater scene. Keep reading on to find out how!
Supplies
- Canson Mixed Media Paper
- Tombow Mono Drawing Pencil
- Tombow Glue Pen
- Tombow Mono Eraser
- Tombow 12 New Dual Brush Pens (or 10 Pack Tropical Set)
- Tombow Mono Drawing Pen (I used size 01)
- Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen (I used the hard brush tip)
Tips
- Place a piece of scrap paper underneath your hand to avoid any smudging.
- Be patient and ensure that the ink is completely dry before using an eraser.
- The Tombow glue pen works best when you apply ink on top instead of watercolour.
Step 1: Draw Your Underwater Scene
Using the Tombow Mono Drawing pencil, draw your underwater scene. Its easiest to start off by creating your divide between sand and water. Then add some fish, bubbles, seaweeds and rocks. I also sketched a quote to pair with the underwater scene. I choose the quote ‘You are the only fish in the sea for me’. I think it goes perfectly with the underwater scene!
Step 2: Apply the Tombow Glue Pen
Using the pencil outline as a guide, take the Tombow glue pen and outline each bubble. Ensure that you are not tracing directly over the pencil and instead are creating a larger bubble around the pencil bubble. Once the glue is applied on top of the pencil, it will stay. Instead we want to erase the pencil at the end.
Also, add the glue pen to the fishes by drawing in some fish scales. Use the glue pen to add any other ‘magical’ details you wish.
Step 3: Add Colour
Add colour to the underwater scene by using the 12 new Tombow dual brush pens. I choose to use this colour palette because it reminds me so much of the tropics. Be creative and don’t be afraid to try different colour combinations that are outside of what you would normal use. Pay attention to see how those ‘magical’ details start to appear that you created with the Tombow glue pen.
Step 4: Letter and Add Details
After the ink had dried, start lettering your quote using the Tombow Fudenosuke brush pen. I also outlined all details using the Tombow Mono drawing pen. Once the ink has dried completely, erase all pencil marks with the Tombow Mono eraser.
