Here’s my exact guide for a new twist on creating traditional watercolour florals!
Hello friends!
I’m back with another fun and easy tutorial! Flipping through Instagram I always see these beautful pictures of watercolour florals that look beautiful. Drawing watercolour florals is not really my thing. I’m sure I can easily learn but my issue is where do I find the time?! That’s how I came up with this easy floral watercolour illustration technique. You can get a similar feel to your illustration but approach the entire process completely differently! Keep reading to find out how.
Supplies
- Canson Mixed Media paper
- Tombow Dual Brush Pens (Select a range of colours that create a colour palette)
- Pentel Water Brush Pen
- Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen (I used the soft tip)
Tips
- Experiment with different colour palettes when using the Tombow Dual brush pens.
- Ensure you choose a brand of paper that will withstand water and be gentle enough for your Tombow dual brush pens.
- Create a design with less florals and create a design with more florals – which one do you like best?
Step 1: Add Colour
Using the Tombow Dual brush pens that you selected, add colour blocks/swatches to your Canson mixed media paper. I find this is easiest when using the brush tip. Be random with your colour placement. There doesn’t have to be any rhyme or reason to the madness! The true magic happens when colours mix and intermingle with each other.
Step 2: Add Water
Add water to the colour by using the Pentel water brush pen. Let the colours run into each other. Blend some colours together. Be open to just going with the flow! Let the watercolour dry completely.
Step 3: Create Florals
Using the bullet tip of the Tombow Dual brush pens, start to draw florals onto the page. Draw some larger florals. Draw smaller florals. Create florals with different shapes. I find that the more diverse the florals are, it creates for an interesting piece.
Finish off by outlining the florals with the Tombow Fudenosuke brush pen.

I hope you try this new twist for creating watercolour florals. I really like this tutorial as it also allows you to use both the brush and bullet tips of the Tombow Dual brush pens. There are so many instances where we only focus on the brush tip and the bullet tip is forgotten!
If you try this project, I would love to see what you come up with. Tag me in your creations! I am interested to see what kind of florals you draw.

- I’m really trying to read a lot more this year. It’s been tough to balance everything but ultimately reading has so many benefits. (P.S. I am still reading ‘Becoming’ by Michelle Obama – I’m hoping to finish very soon!)
